The progress in technology has been especially fast in the 20th and 21st century. With the continuous advancement in electronic technology and machines, it was very likely that with the positive impact of this technological progress, there are negative aspects to consider.
Positive Aspects
Technological change has a tremendous impact on the human condition. It brought positive changes in human activities as these advancements simplified our work, education, communication, health care, and other human activities in many aspects.
The technological advancement has impacted other aspects of society including governance, entertainment, human relationships, and our views on morality, mind, matter, and our human nature. Interestingly, these improvements also stimulate economic development as the productive application of technology lessens the material production cost and overhead charges, which in turn create savings in the economy and help national development.
Negative Aspects
We see the benefits of technology, but let us not forget to consider the negative impact of technological change. Society has become more and more dependent on technology, which sometimes contributes to the lack of willingness to think before we act. Studies say that technology is making us more impatient. For example, it bothers us if it takes more than a few seconds to download a copy of the morning newspaper. We expect quick replies to our email, and we expect someone to answer the phone whenever and wherever we call.
Technology creates separation as spending time with our closed one’s becomes limited. While it is true that people can contact each other through chat and online messaging though they are in the same city, they are forgetting that online chatting can never replace the fun and excitement of meeting personally.
In conclusion, technology is both friend and enemy. If technological advancements are beneficial when put in the best uses, but at the same time its improper use can create havoc in humanity or the world.
